Susie Ibarra, Composer and Percussionist, was born in California
and grew up in Houston Tx. Her music is largely influenced through her work as a performer and
improvisor in avant-garde and experimental music. Ibarra is a Yamaha, Paiste, and Vic Firth artist.
She composes, performs, and records with her ensembles: the Susie Ibarra Trio
with Jennifer Choi & Craig Taborn; Electric Kulintang with Roberto Rodriguez;
Mephista, a collective electro-acoustic trio with Sylvie Courvoisier & Ikue Mori; Shapechanger with Yusef
Komunyakaa; as well as solo.
Some of her recent work include:
- Lakbay, a piece about the lives of Filipino migrant field workers, inspired by
the photos of Ricardo Alvarado and the poetry of Carlos Bulosan. Premiering at the Smithsonian Institution 2002
- Music for 10 percussionists, Artist Residency at the University of Michigan 2004;
- Music for Quartet, premiering at the Diego Rivera Courtyard, Detroit Institute of the Arts 2004;
- Golden Dream, Commission for the Kitchen House Blend 2004
Ibarra and Cuban composer Roberto Rodriguez are currently developing new language of Filipino gong music,
electronics and rhythms for ensemble Electric Kulintang. She is also developing new vocal work in song form as well as
music for the Loboc children's choir. Shangri-La is her first operatic work.
